Joining Exotic & Unusual Metals

Certified and specialised welding are often confused for the same thing. They’re not!

Certified welding is undertaken by a highly qualified individual with more experience than a trades-qualified boilermaker. They have undergone extensive additional training and testing, which is frequently revalidated.

At Hanby Welding & Engineering, we provide specialised welding for customers throughout Cairns and Australia wide.

Specialised welding refers to the capability to be able to weld the more exotic and unusual metals.

Although this type of welding isn’t normally done to a conformity standard such as AS1554, it nevertheless requires an extensive knowledge of metallurgy, welding processes, post-and pre-heat procedures and the availability of electrodes to match parent metals.

Is Your Metal Weldable?

Sadly, not all alloy or cast metals are weldable due to the mix of materials used in manufacture.

The inclusion of manganese in aluminium offers higher tensile strength, which often makes it unweldable after production. Manganese will fizzle and burn like a firecracker as soon as heat is applied to it, hence why it’s unweldable—unless using super glue!

In saying this, you generally will not know whether a cast alloy is weldable just by looking at it. However, we can offer guidance based on our past experiences and can soon tell you if it’s weldable or not.
